Busy Busy Busy Busy….

I haven’t been around much, and probably won’t be for most of this week I have a festival coming up in just two more days and I’ve started my own company in the meantime. It’s J William Sound. I’ve got a tumblr blog/site in the works with some of my ouvre. I also have a bandcamp distribution site set up. And I’m getting business cards.

It actually started because I didn’t want to pay to get into a place and instead said I was recording the show. Which I did, and that’s what’s up on the site right now. But it occurred to me that for a small fee, $5-$10, I could really provide a service to bands like the ones that played. Only one of them has a record and recordings cost a lot of money. Live recordings will never sound like a studio, but I’m not aiming to supplant studios. I’m looking to provide some sort of raw experience that bands can use promotionally and I in turn can get some home studio experience with mastering. It’s a win-win and I make great connections if I ever do booking. It’s good for local music since they get recordings, and it’s great for touring bands since the venues I work in often have very unique sound that won’t be captured elsewhere.

Anyways, check out the business and see what you like. The recordings were done while I was slightly intoxicated and I can hear some of the faults, but one of the band members really like listening to it. So I’m going to chalk this up as a win. So here are the sites:

I hope you enjoy. And seriously, support local music. To see all these bands it would have cost you $5. That’s a beer. Local music is better than beer.

  1. Five or ten dollars is really cheap. Is it worth your while doing it for so little?

    • I’ve done it free a few times. Part of the pricing is because the people that I’m working with are as poor as I am. After I establish my name a bit and get some pro gear (which is close to a $1000), then I might start charging more. Still, I’m there anyways, now I get in free and drink for free, and mastering only takes me about 45 minutes, so it’s pretty close to fair for the labor involved once drinks, food, and music are accounted for. After I get pro equipment, then I start doing demos on a PA and charging something closer to $250 for that, but that’s a whole album that they get.
